Growing up in
Texas , I always had the desire to express myself artistically. As I matured, I have adopted more of an "East meets West" outlook and spiritual philosophy. I find through observing nature and the world around me, the true of Divinity and this is what I endeavor to capture. It is my hope that I can in some small way live up to this purpose. To this end, photography has become my passion. Through my love of travel, photography provides the means for expressing the beauty I constantly see around me and the Divinity that is inherent within it.
I therefore, mainly photograph nature, i.e., landscapes, flora and fauna. For example, I love to photograph swans as they seem to embody serenity and gracefulness. Then there is the qualities of water, the movement and flow representing the life force as well mirrored reflections in still bodies of water epitomizing the “as above so below” principle. I also enjoy photographing people, especially children.
I also have a strong affinity for my Scottish ancestry and have traveled extensively in which makes up a major portion of my work. It is through this affinity that I am also drawn to the
Carolinas just as my ancestors were along with many other Scots who settled in these areas.
I am inspired in my photography by two quotes which sum up my "mission statement":
"Art is contemplation. It is the pleasure of the mind which searches into nature and which there divines the spirit of which Nature herself is animated." - Auguste Rodin
"Every beauty which is seen here below by persons of perception resembles more than anything else that celestial source from which we all are come." - Michelangelo
They have given me the focus for what I wish to capture in my photographs. In fact, the quote by Rodin was also instrumental in how I named my body of work and my website which is Photo Contemplations. It was reaffirmed by a good friend who said to me one day that she utilized my photographs to contemplate upon in doing her daily meditation.
