Jack Schmidt's Bio

Jack Schmidt grew up in a small rural community located in southeastern Michigan. At the age of 16 his family moved to central Ohio, where he was introduced to art classes in high school, but then turned his attention to making a living and raising a family. Moving to Greenville, South Carolina in 1996 he has finally received formal training in fine arts and graphic design, which included many hours in the darkroom. Now his film is a memory card and his darkroom a computer, Jack has spent countess hours exploring the endless possibilities of digital photography. He does not claim to be a purest when it comes to photographic processes; he is open to using any tools available to him as an artist. “The final image is more important to me, then the process”.

Jack’s photographs are often of common objects, or people in common life situations, but are presented in such a style as to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. Jack’s work often focuses on the scarred, the aged, and the imperfect to portray the struggles in life, while holding out the opportunity for healing. He captures the essence of the subject while creating an image that invites the viewer to interpret the work in terms of his or her own experiences and values. Jack believes that he can connect with his viewers through his images by triggering an emotional feeling or memory, and encouraging them to look at even the uncomfortable aspects of life.
