About Greenville, South Carolina

Featured Sites

Greenville is a beautiful, outstanding area in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains and is graced with numerous hills and knolls. The highest point in South Carolina, The Sassafras Mountain, is nearby in the northern part of Greenville County. Lying halfway between Charlotte and Atlanta, Greenville is an inviting upstate city with tree-lined streets in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is an excellent hub for exploring the Upstate and the forested parks throughout the area.

Since the Civil War, Greenville's economy has been based largely on textile manufacturing and it has been referred to as the textile center of the world. Textile Hall is the scene of the biennial Southern Textile Exposition hosted by Greenville. The city is the seat of Furman University, Bob Jones University, Greenville Technical College, and a Shriners' hospital for children.

Greenville began as a trading post in the 1700s. During the antebellum era, the area was a resort for plantation owners from the Low Country. It progressed to textiles, and the textile industry began there in the 1820s. The mills followed and were built in the 1870s.

In 1925, The Westin Poinsett was one of the supreme hotels in the area. In 2002 it came back newly restored while keeping the charm of history with setting including 21st-century conveniences.

Pettigru Place Bed and Breakfast is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lovely tree-lined street, in the Pettigru Historic District, is near downtown Greenville. The Georgian Federalist-design house was built in the 1920s and each room’s decor gives mood and variety that includes, for example, the Chantilly, Victorian decor, and an African theme with a Brass Giraffe, and the feature of a 12-inch brass shower head for a rain-forest effect.

The Embassy Suites Resort Hotel Golf and Conference Center on the Verdae Greens Golf Course is equal to park-like ambience. Plant-lined walkways, bubbling pools and fountains, are inviting. The comfortable two-room suites are decorated with a contemporary flair.

The Hilton Greenville is conveniently located opposite Haywood Mall and is a short drive to downtown.

Healy, John Ross Key, Georgia O'Keefe, William Tylee Ranney, Helen Turner, and Catherine Wiley.
